listen up, whiners!

there are bad calls in sports. every game. there has not been a perfect, justly officiated game, in any sport... ever.

am i glad that the ducks won? heck yes, ya'll. was it the most fun i've had at a game since they beat the longhorns in san diego? absolutely. do i find it annoying when people ask rhetorical questions and immediately follow with an answer? who doesn't.

but the fact remains... the last three minutes of the game cannot be replayed. who's to say if the officials had ruled differently, that oklahoma wouldn't have fumbled the snap leading oregon to run the ball into the endzone and still win? why didn't oklahoma's kicker kick that ball three inches higher, making it unblockable? and why is it only the end of the game calls that are so controversial? what about all of the missed pass interference calls? or the uncalled holding or blocks in the back? some went oregon's way that shouldn't have, some went oklahoma's.

there are real men officiating these games. we all have a bad day at work. period. i do not buy into that garbage about officials rigging games. i'm sure it happens sometimes, but i don't think that it's the rule. for every call that goes our way, there is one that doesn't. just like in life.

bottom line. there are bad calls every game, all the time. like i said, i'm glad oregon won. but let us have our victory, let us remember that we beat oklahoma ONE IN SIX TIMES, not that there were some controversial calls. oklahoma can have the other FIVE times. including the bowl victory.

but folks, this... this should never happen.

still on my saturday, high... rebecca marie

p.s. i had the most fun tailgating with loo and bsc. it was wonderfully weird meeting people for the first time and feeling like i'd known them forever. come back soon, unless you hate us, you know... since we won. can't we all just get along?

14 flattering compliments:

Word. Word. Wordie word word.

Here's how I feel about the bad call issue (in general, and for this game in particular): If winning is that important to you, you have to play in such a way that a bad call can never lose a game for you. If you don't, and you put yourselves in the position to lose a game over a questionable call, then it's as much (or more) your fault as it is the officials'.

That's why I don't spend much time bellyachin' when the shoe is on the other foot. Bad calls happen. It's a fact, accept it as a factor. You have to play well enough that a bad call can't determine the outcome of the game. If you can't, then that's football. (There's no crying in football.) Sometimes it's heartbreaking, sometimes it's a huge break--and it always seems to even out in the long run.

As for this particular situation, the play was reviewed and the officials (paid experts, not just viewers in the stands, mind you) made their ruling. There's a chance they were wrong in their decision, but there's also a chance that they know just a little more about it than the average Joe Football Fan. The game is over, it is what it is. Shut up and color. (And yes, I'd say the same thing if the call had gone the other way.)

Officially the longest comment ever. No need for review.

I honestly don't have much of an opinion about the game (bsc has enough of an opinion for the both of us so I'll let him voice it if he desires).

When it comes down to it, it was a fun game to watch, even if OU didn't win.

What I learned about Oregon and OU fans at the game is that the majority of them are really decent people who are just looking for a good time. What sucks is the few fans who take it too far and ruin it for the rest of us. Sorry, but loosing a football game is not a good enough reason to threaten someone's life. Nor does winning give anyone the right to make highly inappropriatley comments to a pregnant lady who's just trying to find her car and drive home.

I'm just sick of it all already. Can we please just do what needs to be done ... let it go and move on. I'm sure this isn't the last time officials will make bad calls, nor was it the first.

loo, i'm sorry people were rude to you. i'm glad you spent enough time in oregon to find out that we don't collectively suck.

gina... you said it, sister.

HEre's the even more intuiging thing, as more news is coming out, it seems as though the replay official wasn't even able to watch the replays! No seriously, there were some technical difficulties and he was only able to watch one "obstructed" angle of the replay. From that one bad angle he did not have enough evidence to overturn the call.
How awesome is that?

So what are the excuses for the refs in last year's Super Bowl? The Seahawks won that game, but somehow the Steelers ended up with the trophy.

Thanks, Tim; your words express my heart exactly.

I think that the Oakie-homma folks should be pissed (they lost, get mad). But I think the president of a University ought to have a little more dignity and decorum than to demand that this loss be stricken from their record and that Oregon be voted out of the Union and that ducks be hunted to extinction (ok, maybe he didn't say all of that).

Dude, it's a football game. It's about as important as . . . well a game. Sure we spend millions of dollars and watch thousands of hours of TV all related to games. I'm fine with that. I'm a huge fan of the sports and all that. I was hoarse after every Seahawks game I watched last year. But when it comes down to it, life goes on.

So, Stoops-ey, stop whining about how the refs cost you a national title or some such crap. You're going to loose again and the point will be moot. Your team isn't that good if (as Gina said) Oregon could score on you twice in 72 seconds - did the refs make your cornerbacks and safeties run slower and miss their assignments? Didn't think so.

Wuss.

Yeah, I was forced to ref two soccer games (alone and with zero training or prep). I was AWFUL, but the one call that I am sure I made correctly is the one call that I got flack about: off-sides. I played defense for two of my high school years, I know what off-sides is (even if I don't know if it has a hyphen) and I lived in fear of not getting the call, or of being in a position that allowed the other team to avoid the call. In short: reffing is hard, having been a terrible ref, I empathize with these guys.

i think it's re-dic-alos that people take sports that seriously. Death threats? Seriously? It's effing football, people... get a life. (not you, ReMa... the other people who called the guy.)

It's funny to hear James talk about football just being a "game" 'cause I remember playing "games" with James and I think that an observer would say that he takes "games" very seriously. In all truth, James has threatened my life on at least two occasions because of a so called "game".

(some or all of that may or may not be true)
